Warm Up Begins Today – Several Rain Chances This Week

Posted on: 9:22 am, February 16, 2014, by , updated on: 10:50am, February 16, 2014

It was another cold start across the Tennessee Valley, with a few passing clouds overnight and maybe even a sprinkle or two as upper – level disturbance passed nearby, but the majority stayed dry.  The disturbance and clouds cleared quickly, with a mostly clear sky by daybreak, which allowed any early risers to see a 98% visible Waning Gibbous moon setting in the western sky this morning. Here is a beautiful view of the moon nearing the horizon just before sunrise from our Jack’s camera in Guntersville.

We woke up to temperatures this morning in the mid to upper 20s and low 30s, with only a very light southeast breeze.

Today we begin a warming trend, with highs around 10-15 degrees warmer than yesterday, in the mid 50s!  A mostly sunny sky will prevail, with a wind becoming west-northwesterly at about 6-12 mph by this afternoon.  The warm up continues throughout the week, with highs Monday near 60°, and in the mid to upper 60s for the remainder of the week.  A few communities may even reach the low 70s by Thursday!  Morning lows will start out in the mid 30s Monday, but gradually rise into the low to mid 50s Wednesday – Friday.

Along with the warm up, comes several chances of rain as a series of upper level disturbances and a late week storm system move across the area.  The first will come late Monday, with the Tennessee Valley receiving the tail end of the rain.  The majority of the daylight hours on Monday will be dry, with increasing clouds throughout the day a chance for showers by late afternoon and evening.  Rain will exit early Tuesday, with the rest of Tuesday remaining dry.  There is a small chance for rain Wednesday, but the majority will stay dry.

A more potent storm system will approach late in the week, bringing another chance for rain.  An upper-level disturbance will approach late Thursday increasing the chance for showers and storms.  Rain chances will continue through Saturday as that disturbance passes by and the slow-moving storm system approaches and eventually moves through.

Heavy rain and thunderstorms will be a possibility during this time frame, with exact details of timing and intensity still uncertain.  We’ll be posting more in-depth updates on the rain chances this week and especially the late week storm system in the coming days, as thing become more clear.  For now, enjoy the beautiful day!
