Rain On the Way

In the words of the Eurythmics, “Here Comes the Rain Again.” Clouds stream north this morning and a wet afternoon is in the forecast. Rain already breaks out this morning across southern Mississippi and south Alabama. Don’t expect severe weather like we had last weekend. Get your activities done early today as rain is possible just after lunch especially south of the Tennessee River.

It’s chilly this morning, but not nearly as cold thanks to cloud cover. Clouds act like a blanket and keep the “heat” in and not let it escape out in the atmosphere. We’re in the 30s and 40s opposed to the teens and 20s we’ve had most of the week. Don’t expect any frozen precipitation with this system. That could change by Monday. Details on that further down.

Here is a look at the GFS output. This computer model has had a good handle on the last couple of systems and we’ll go with this one today. It shows rain overspreading the area around midday and lasting through the afternoon. Pockets of moderate rain are likely later this evening into the overnight. Expect the wet weather to hold on during the morning hours Sunday before drier air takes over later in the day. Rain totals could be impressive with most locations seeing at least one half an inch. The further east you are, the higher rain totals are possible. DeKalb, Jackson, and Marshall Counties could see an inch of rain. Here is a look at the GFS model.

Valid Today at Noon

The GFS shows light rain by noon across portions of the Tennessee Valley. The legend at the bottom of the graphic shows the rainfall total ending at this time. Areas south and west have about a tenth of an inch of rain ending at noon today. Of course the rain continues to spread north through the afternoon.

Valid Today at 6pm

It’s raining everywhere at 6pm. There is a pocket of locally heavy rain just south of the Tennessee Valley this evening. Rain totals approach one half of an inch for most everyone by 6pm this evening.

It’s a possibility during the day Monday as a weak disturbance moves through. Don’t expect much though. A few flurries or sprinkles are possible at this time. No accumulation and runs to the grocery store aren’t necessary. Here is a look at our computer model showing a hint of a flurry Monday.
