Last Night’s Lightning Show

Posted on: 11:48 am, June 14, 2013, by

After sharing a Facebook video of the incredible lightning show viewed from Shelby County last night, I got a lot of notes saying that same lightning was visible as far north as Madison and Limestone Counties (about 140 miles north of the line of storms). This is another video shot by Brian Scott who was flying into Birmingham at as the storms were moving south toward US 80 from Demopolis to Montgomery.

The line of storms in Central Alabama was producing about 8 lightning strikes PER SECOND!!!

Here’s another cool shot from Brian from around sunset; it looks like a field of mushrooms off in the distance, but those are actually the tops of the strong storms hitting the tropopause and spreading out into anvil clouds.
