Areas of Rain – Then Much Colder

GFS 850

Cloud cover increases today with scattered showers. The best chance of widespread rain comes after sunset. Heavy rain and flooding occurred this morning in south Alabama near Mobile. The best chance of severe weather remains to our south.

This morning a few light rain showers popped up near Phil Campbell and in southern Lawrence County not far from Moulton. The heaviest rain moves in tonight as some areas could be upwards of one inch of precipitation. Huntsville and Muscle Shoals have a chance of seeing over 12″ of rain just in January and February alone. This model shows steady rain at 9pm.

Now, to the big change. A cold snap is possible later this week as a big trough of low pressure in the upper atmosphere sets up shop in the southeast. This means temperatures average well below normal. This is the GFS model valid for Saturday evening. When you see an area of low pressure along the east coast, coupled with blue, pink, and red taking over, that translates to very cold air! Highs may not get out of the 30s! That is something to watch in the coming days.
