Warm Today – Stormy By Wednesday

Here is a shot from downtown Huntsville at Veterans Memorial Park at 4am. Winds will gust over 20 mph through the afternoon today and tomorrow. Temperatures warm nicely into the middle 60s today with lower 70s on Tuesday.

The reason for the milder temperatures is a big trough of low pressure across the western United States. That trough is allowing warmer air to flow north across the eastern U.S. Unforunately, a strong cold front approaches Tuesday night and Wednesday morning increasing our chance of strong storms. It’s too early to tell if tornadoes will be a threat, but damaging winds are a good bet early Wednesday morning.

Here is the 850 millibars temperatures valid Tuesday. The orange and red represent very warm air around 5000 feet above the ground. That translates to highs in the lower 70s.

Here is one of several computer models showing strong storms moving in early Wednesday. Again, we’ll monitor the timing and strength as the cold front gets closer.
