Snow Progress Report

Just before 7 AM, the National Weather Service in Birmingham is considering upgrading Marion, Lamar and Winston Counties to a Winter Storm Warning as they monitor trends in Mississippi.

So far in Mississippi:

Pearl (Jackson Area): 3″
Madison (Jackson Area): 3″
Yazoo City: 2″
Grenada: 2″
Decatur (MS): Streets are becoming white

The rain is already starting to mix with sleet in Northwest Alabama, and it is changing to snow in Northeast Mississippi. A total changeover to snow is likely this morning between 9 AM and Noon, and some snow could be very heavy at times in the higher terrain of Northeast Alabama. Here’s is the 3 AM RPM Model Snow Accumulation:

Those light blue areas show potential for 2-4 inches; however, due to warm ground, we are keeping the snow accumulation forecast map we have had since last night:

Some adjustments will probably be needed as we “stick our head out the door” and watch trends to the west and see new model data over the next 3 hours.

Travel is still expected to be ok across most of Alabama and South Tennessee; however, where the heaviest snow falls, there will be some temporary highway icing. There is also a chance of black ice where water remains standing on roads late tonight through Friday morning.
