Sunny & Chilly Sunday
After days of clouds lingering, the sky finally cleared overnight, as high pressure moved in from the west! Check out this gorgeous shot from our Athens State University camera this morning!
Thanks to the clearing sky and lighter wind, temperatures have dropped off for most into the 20s this morning. Even though the wind has relaxed some, there is still a wind chill, with some experiencing wind chills in the upper teens…bundle up!
Despite the sunshine, highs will be around 10 degrees below average for late December and will only warm into the low to mid 40s this afternoon, with some of the higher elevations in Northeast Alabama and adjacent southern middle Tennessee only warming into the 30s.
Tonight will again be chilly, with temperatures falling quickly this evening under a clear sky, but clouds will build in late. Monday morning lows will mostly be in the upper 20s. New Year’s Eve will be warmer than today, as surface high pressure shifts east and a southerly wind returns, with highs around average, in the low 50s. Expect a mix of sun and clouds New Year’s Eve, with rain chances increasing later in the afternoon, especially after sunset towards midnight for communities west of I-65. We are not expecting any storms with this next system, generally just a cold rain that will spread east across the area into New Years Day morning. Not everyone will be ringing in the New Year with rain, but have your rain gear handy just in case as rain chances increase especially after midnight. Gradual clearing will occur from northwest to southeast New Years Day as a cold front moves through, bringing a reinforcing shot of colder and drier air.
Hope everyone has a safe and happy New Year!
