The Next 24 Hours – Warm Wednesday

Posted on: 8:09 pm, September 25, 2012, by

Temperatures are going to back above normal again for a few days starting with Wednesday. Morning low temperatures will be about 5 to 10 degrees warmer than those on Tuesday; expect a solid 3 to 5 degree warm-up in the afternoon with high temperatures approaching 85 degrees between 1 PM and 4 PM. A mostly sunny sky and a southwest breeze around 10 to 15 miles per hou will combine to finish off the warming trend over the next two days. Highs could be as warm as 87 to 89 degrees by Thursday, but then cooler air and some light rain becomes a possibility! Be sure to click over to WHNT.com Weather where we’ve got a detailed discussion about the seven day forecast!

As an aside, Tuesday’s 12:01 of sunlight and Wednesday’s 11:59 of sunlight are the closest thing we will come to seeing what the Equinox is really like. The main difference between our twelve-hour day and the one on the Equator is the position of the sun. In North Alabama and Middle Tennessee, the solar angle is much lower than the one at the Equator. In Huntsville on September 25th, the sun’s highest point was 53.7º above the southern horizon. At the Equator on Tuesday, the noon sun was 88º above the horizon (almost directly overhead). That makes a big difference in the brightness and intensity of the sunlight for sure! The only time the Sun is directly overhead at the Equator is on the Vernal (Spring) and Autumnal (Fall) Equinox; if the Sun is every directly overhead in the Tennessee Valley, hide! That means something is really, really wrong with the Earth’s axis of rotation OR continental drift has accelerated! (We don’t expect that to happen anytime soon.)
