Photos of Summer’s Last Day

There’s a slight chill to the air this evening, and that’s just a reminder that the brutal heat of the Summer of 2012 is over. It’s done, and it won’t be coming back! We may have a few warm days now and then, but the odds of surpassing 90º again are very, very low!

In fact, Huntsville has only gotten to 90º or hotter on seven occasions in the month of October since 1959; Muscle Shoals has recorded 90º days thirteen times in that same period (1959 to 2011).

Temperatures over the past three-and-a-half-months have been somewhat variable; the summer season started out with some extremely hot dry weather. The month of June was 0.6º F above normal; however, the hottest temperature of the season occurred on June 29: Huntsville hit 107º. Muscle Shoals’ highest temperature was 107º the following day (6/30).

July was 2.4º F above the 30-year average, but August saw a reversal as the mean monthly temperature fell to 2.1º F below average. Up to the final day of summer, September has been unusually cool as well: 2.3ºF below normal.

Fall often brings some beautiful sunsets! Here are some our readers and viewers shared tonight!
