Afternoon Storms in Progress

Posted on: 2:30 pm, August 2, 2012, by

There are some big rumblers out there on this hot August afternoon. Most reporting stations in North Alabama and Southern Tennessee are in the neighborhood of 93 to 97 degrees as of 2:30 PM, and there is still room to get hotter with some of us approaching 100º by 4 PM.

No “severe” storms have occurred yet, but there has been one persistent cluster of strong storms moving south out of Lawrence and Morgan Counties into Cullman and Winston Counties over the past 90 minutes:

There is an unconfirmed report via Twitter that a Texaco gas station lost an awning west of Cullman; winds are at least in the 40-50 MPH range if not a little higher within that storm. It is moving SOUTHEAST, but there are other storms developing farther north.

For the rest of the afternoon, look out for some hit-or-miss storms. With all of this heat and humidity, some of them could quickly turn strong or severe and produce tremendous lightning.
